Very dramatic. At the castle, other people joined our group as we went along just to hear him. We had dinner one night at Harry Ramsden's, which we would recommend highly! GAIL <COMPUSERVE 106306,2247> LEEDS, UK - My wife, two children and I, visited Scotland last Summer. Being a Macdonald, I had to see Skye and the Clan Donald Center, if that wasn't enough, we were lucky enough to have dinner at the B&B of Lord and Lady Macdonald themselves. We met Lord Macdonald who remembered my region (Nothern California) since he was once the Grand Marshall of the Scottish Games in Santa Rosa. Wonderful trip! We travelled mainly through the Western Isles and Highlands and met some wonderful people along the way! Here's just one example: Bill & I brought our 18th century style wedding outfits with us, hoping to have a wedding portrait taken in front of a Scottish castle during our stay. While visiting the Isle of Skye, we stayed at the Atholl House Hotel in Dunvegan, which is run by the McLeod family. We mentioned our idea to Joan McLeod during dinner on Friday evening. She was nice enough to call a photographer she knew that very evening to see what she could do to help. Sure enough, the photographer, Mike Williams, was available to do the photo shoot and was willing to drive from his home on the tip of Skye (Duntalin?) to meet us at Dunvegan Castle the next morning. I would recommend both the Atholl House Hotel and Mike (who did a fantastic job by the way) to anyone planning a romantic getaway to Skye. Now we have a very special wedding album and fond memories of the people from the isle of Skye! Capt. Lynn R. McR. Hawkins, Ret., FSA Scot., Deputy Commissioner, State of TN, Clan Donald USA 1172 Weaver Branch Road, Bluff City, Tennessee 37618-2546 USA Capt. Lynn R. McR. Hawkins, Ret., FSA Scot. <****************> Bluff City, TN USA - My 8th great grandparents were Johne and Catherine MacRanald/ MacRannald, Sr. Their son Johne MacRanald, Jr., baptized August 1672, my direct ancestor, was later in the Seige of Derry and it is thought he was also at the Battle of the Boyne. Johne, Jr. died 1760, near Stewartstown, County Tyrone, Ulster. At present it has been proven that all McReynolds (MacRanald/ MacRannald) in Ulster, U.S., and Canada descend from Johne MacRanald/MacRannald (McReynolds) and one of his two wives. I would be very grateful for "ANY" information at all concerning the now rare name MacRanald/MacRannald. Also, would like to receive any histories of MacRanald/MacRannald families in the Highlands and/or other sections of Scotland, ca 1400's to 1745. Are there any Scottish Clan Donald members with the surname MacRanald/MacRannald or McReynolds?? God and St. Andrew Thank you, Lynn R. McR. Hawkins, FSA Scot. Any help with recommended B&B addresses in Harris/Lewis (with prices) would be much appreciated. Also would love to meet up with spinners and to see fleeces (and sheep) at close quarters, and also see spinning wheels. Any help would be most welcome - before 21st May 97. Thanks. Helen Harker <Harker.Home@uni.massey.ac.nz> Palmerston North, New Zealand - A very good site with usefull info. However, the links to send you mail directly don't seem to work. Also, as a regular visitor to the NW Highlands, I'd be very interested in seeing some information as to the best local/national radio stations to listen to in order to get weather forecasts for the hills. What are the radio frequencies, and what times are the most detailed reports given? I think some (Ullapool local radio?) even gives midge reports - very useful! Phone lines for the weather are rediculously expensive, and the reports posted at Tourist info offices are usually only available sporadically, and often (quite) late in the morning. Hopefully a constructive suggestion? [I'd be happy to be mailed any specific information of forecasts, if you have it] Jeff Jeff Farr <jfarr@drake.bt.co.uk> UK - As every year, I will spend a couple of weeks on Skye with my family. I'm looking forward to it very much, since we will celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary there. A good place to eat and commemorate such happy events is at a beautiful Hotel/Restaurant in Floddigarry. Any more information required? Just contact me! One more thing: Is there a homepage especially for the Isle of Skye, like there is the "Zetnet" for the Shetland Islands? If you could let me know I would be very grateful. Vincent Vaughn <raven@vr-net.com> Portland, OR USA - I just finished perusing your website, and it is exquisite. In 1990-1991, my senior year of high school, we had a foreign exchange student from Dundee named Gabrielle ("Gabs" to me). She quickly became my best friend, and we shared many wonderful memories together. After breaking her ankle on the high school stairs, she stayed with my family for almost the rest of her stay. She is like a member of our family. We graduated together, for which her family came over to attend. After six years of correspondence and sparse telephone calls, I am finally taking the vacation I have always dreamed of. I will be traveling to Scotland this April (1997) for 17 days. Gabs is taking her vacation at the same time, and together we are exploring her gorgeous country and rekindling our friendship. After viewing the photos here, I am even more anxious for the next three weeks to fly by so that I can see my Scottish kindred spirit again and experience the glory that is Scotland. Thank you! A presto...
